Safety & Self-Care Spotlight

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

We encourage you to stand in solidarity with survivors, raise awareness, and promote healthy, supportive relationships for all.
A graphic with a gradient blue background shows a line drawing of a hand holding a phone. At the top, white text reads: “Start the Conversation. Be the Difference.” To the right, a light blue text box says: “That ‘Hey, you good?’ text could mean more than you know.” At the bottom right is the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) logo.
We also encourage you to join the fight against breast cancer this October by spreading awareness, supporting survivors, and encouraging regular health screenings for early detection.

Events & Opportunities

Game Day Green Team - Volunteer Opportunity

  • With football season for the Hokies well underway, so is all the fun surrounding the game. The Office of Sustainability is encouraging Sustainable Tailgating, primarily targeting the proper recycling of cans and bottles. The Game Day Green Team is a volunteer opportunity focused on proper recycling at tailgates and encouraging others to do the same. Join us 4 hours before kick-off to achieve this goal! Only 2 hours of volunteering are required, allowing two hours of free time prior to kick-off. This is a great way to get volunteer hours fulfilled and participate in a cause that helps our community thrive.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

  • The VOICES Peer Education program offers peer-led educational workshops for student leaders and organizations on campus on topics such as bystander intervention, healthy relationships and understanding gender-based violence. VOICES believes in supporting survivors and October is DVAM! In honor of DVAM, we will be wearing purple for Purple Thursday, October 23, 2025 and we invite your organization to join us. Let's show the Hokie community how you CARE! CARE is a bystander intervention model that promotes community safety. Here is how you can participate:
    • Make a video and/or a social media post as to why bystander intervention is important for you or your organization and be sure to tag the Office of Sexual Violence Prevention and Education on their instagram (@svpe_vt)!
