Below you will find information regarding the status of each chapter (as of 1/10/2019) based on findings determined through a review by Student Conduct through either an agreed resolution or formal hearing. An "active santion status" can include any of the following statuses:

Probation- Student organizations are notified that their status with the university for a specified period of time is such that further violations of university policy will result in being considered for loss of recognition from the university. If at the end of the specified time period no further violations have occurred, the organization is removed from probationary status.

Deferred Suspension- In some cases, a sanction of loss of recognition may be held in abeyance for a specified period. This means that, if the organization is found responsible for any violation during that period, they will be subject to the deferred sanction without further review in addition to the disciplinary action appropriate to the new violation. During this time, student organizations may be prohibited from participating in any social functions.

Cease Operations- While an organization is under investigation, the Office of Student Conduct may place them on a "cease operations" status, which indicates that they may not engage in a specific organization related activity until the matter is resolved. Cease operation types may include but are not limited to: social events, new member activities, and chapter operations.

For further information on what each status and policy violation is please consult the Hokie Handbook.

Statement on Unrecognized Organizations

Chapters that have lost recognition have no relationship with the university while they serve a loss of recognition for violations of the Student Code of Conduct. If a chapter has had its recognition revoked by Virginia Tech it is because they have had egregious and repeated violations of the Student Code of Conduct and this has been established through a formal hearing administered by the Student Conduct office. At times, an inter/national headquarters may decide to allow the chapter to operate locally without recognition from Virginia Tech. Information regarding these chapters can be obtained by contacting the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Although the University cannot legally prevent students from joining or maintaining active involvement with a fraternity or sorority that has lost its University recognition, students are strongly discouraged from doing so and should understand the risks they are undertaking.  Any student considering joining or maintaining membership in such an organization should carefully investigate the organization, the circumstances surrounding the University’s or national organization’s revocation of recognition and evaluate whether the organization maintains a safe environment that supports student growth and learning. Unrecognized organizations operate without the advising, oversight, training, and education provided by the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, Virginia Tech, and often their national organizations. They do not have membership in the Interfraternity Council (IFC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), Panhellenic Council (PHC) or United Council of Fraternities and Sororities (UCFS).

Special note regarding Kappa Delta Rho (KDR). Upon suspension and revocation of charter by the national headquarters in 2016, former members of the chapter formed an off-campus fraternity by the name of Omega Alpha Kappa (OAK). While they are currently a local organization, they have no relationship to Virginia Tech and potential members and families should be aware of this when considering membership.
