Statement on Unrecognized Chapters
Fraternity and Sorority Life at Virginia Tech is an active and vibrant community of more than 5,400 students in 60 chapters represented by four governing councils. Each of these chapters is recognized and registered by the university and supported by larger inter/national organizations. Registered student organizations (RSOs) benefit from multiple levels of support and have access to professional advisement, campus and organizational resources and university facilities. These organizations receive leadership programming, educational resources, and risk management training from Virginia Tech. A list of recognized and registered fraternities and sororities is provided on the back of this document and additional information is available at http://www.fsl.vt.edu/. We encourage all students and their families to visit this site to learn more about our dynamic community.
We also wish to provide you information about fraternities that have lost recognition from Virginia Tech and/or their inter/national organizations due to disciplinary action. While some of these organizations may still operate, they have no affiliation with Virginia Tech.
Unrecognized organizations are: 1) not advised by the university; 2) unable to utilize campus resources; and 3) prohibited from participating in Fraternity and Sorority Life events. Groups operating in this capacity do not have the same oversight of University policies and regulations, which could result in undesirable consequences for both individual members and that group.
Given that these groups were suspended due to violations of the Student Code of Conduct, such as the hazing and alcohol beverage policies, we encourage you to have conversations with your students about the risks of joining these organizations or participating in their events. The following organizations are currently unrecognized by the university:
Delta Kappa Epsilon*
Kappa Sigma*
Pi Kappa Phi
Pi Lambda Phi
Sigma Chi
Additionally, there are several local organizations that have no affiliation with the university and are not connected to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, such as Gold Club, Omega Alpha Kappa (OAK) and Center Club.
*Indicates the chapter is still chartered by their inter/national organization but they are not recognized by Virginia Tech.
