Byron Hughes serves as the director of Fraternity and Sorority Life. In this position, Hughes provides overall leadership, strategic planning and support to the four governing councils, as well as leadership and supervision to the team members in Fraternity and Sorority Life. He works closely with the aspects of strategic planning, leadership, assessment, conduct, fraternity and sorority housing, policies and procedures and serves on various committees. Additionally, he advises off-campus community relations and serves as a member of the Town-Gown Committee. Hughes holds a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Ball State University and a bachelor’s degree in English from Salisbury University. Previously he served as associate director for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
As assistant director of Student Conduct at Virginia Tech, he adjudicated cases and determined sanctions for students and organizations charged with violations of the Student Code of Conduct, and worked closely with the Corps of Cadets and the Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center.
Hughes also worked at Salisbury University in Housing and Residence Life for six years in a variety of roles, including assistant director of housing and area director.
He provides volunteer support to several national and international fraternities and sororities and his organization memberships include the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) and Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
